Yeah, it is pretty crazy. We have loads of coyotes in the area, but they're more in the hills and not in people's backyards (though they do venture near sometimes - one killed my next door neighbor's cat years ago). And we've had mountain lions in the area before. They eat different sorts of small animals: rabbits, small rodents, etc. Maybe birds, I'm not sure. I don't know about our neighbors (I think they mostly hang out in our backyard, I don't know if they've ever ventured anywhere else. I suppose it's pretty likely that they have), but when we first saw them a few years ago, my mom called either animal control or the animal shelter about them, and they told us that they were fine and it was highly unlikely that they'd hurt us, so we've just... let them be.
