Well, July's over. In July I watched 181 episodes of TV, 7 movies, and read 0 books (well, 0 books for the first time, which is what I count for books. I did reread the entire Harry Potter series). I'm surprised I watched that many movies; it didn't feel like I saw that many. It feels like I watched a lot more TV than that, though.
I finished all 5 seasons of Angel. I will probably write up my random thoughts about the show and post them, but I had to take a step back after the finale. The last half of season 5 hit me really hard, even though I was spoiled for everything that happened. I'm probably going to do a picspam of my favorite episodes and/or moments, too. I just wanted to take a break and detach myself a little from the show; I got a bit overinvested at the end.
My mom was in Minnesota over the weekend for the science fiction/fantasy writers' convention she goes to every year (since she is a sci fi/fantasy writer). Normally on the weekend I watch stuff with my parents (right now we're on Buffy Season 3; before that we were getting through HIMYM), but my dad and I didn't want to get further in Buffy without my mom, and my dad has been really wanting to see Dexter after hearing that it was really great from me and someone else, so we started season 1 of that instead.
He really enjoys it, which doesn't surprise me. He likes dark humor stuff. Plus, season 1 of Dexter is one of my favorite TV seasons ever; it's so well put together. It's not my first choice of show to watch with my parents (too much nudity, sex, and swearing. Not that they'd be upset with me for watching it, or anything; I am 20, and they've watched and enjoyed stuff like The Sopranos and other HBO/Showtime shows before. It's mostly just that it's really awkward no matter how old I am to hear certain words - such as "cocksucker" - or see naked people and sex and stuff with my parents), but I suppose I could be watching True Blood with them, which would definitely be more awkward.
My dad totally called that Rudy/Brian is the Ice Truck Killer when he started kissing Deb in Circle of Friends. I was just like "Uh... what makes you think that?" and first he was like "He knows stuff about body parts." Then when it was revealed in Shrink Wrap, he was like "I knew it when he was talking about his mother dying in the car accident and putting the pieces together!" I'm happy that they reveal it this early because I might have slipped and confirmed it if it was revealed later. I'm excited for when he finds out the whole truth, though; Rudy/Brian being the killer isn't really shocking, even if you don't figure it out on your own, but the whole thing about him being his brother and everything that happens in the finale is. I can't remember if I figured it out or not. I'm pretty sure I got spoiled for him being the killer right before the episode, because I think I would have remembered figuring it out on my own, but I definitely don't remember being surprised by it either.
I haven't watched season 1 since the first time I saw it two summers ago. The first few episodes are pretty slow (the pilot is mostly just exposition, but it makes sense that it is, considering it's the pilot and they have to explain how Dexter came to be who he is), but the show really picks up around episode 4. I really, really love Rudy/Brian (...does that say something really bad about me?). The actor is excellent, and he's such an interesting character. I wish he could have stayed around somehow for future seasons. I do really love seasons 2 and 3 (well, except for Lila; I couldn't stand her), but season 1 is such perfection. It's so much fun watching it again.
We've only gotten through episode 8, so I'm really looking forward to watching the last 4 episodes again. And I'm curious as to what my mom will think about the show. I think I'll try to catch her up during the week so we can finish the season over the weekend with my dad.
I'm considering reading the Sookie Stackhouse books, but I'm afraid that the rest of the season of True Blood wouldn't be as fun being spoiled for whatever happens. =/ I read the first one after finishing the first season, but I don't know if I want to go any further. Has anyone who watches the show also read the books? Did reading the books detract from your enjoyment of the show? I wish I could know how closely the True Blood writers were planning on following stuff in the books for future seasons. I know they've already changed stuff, but I believe the major season plotlines are the same.
