I feel like they do have to go into their relationship because if they just leave season 1 with them kissing and then go into season 2 and there's no mention of anything between them, then... it just doesn't make any sense.
Yeah, I heard that he was supposed to die in season 1, and I'm so glad they changed their minds about that, because Ianto is totally my favorite character besides Jack.
