I'm with you completely on the Lost thing. It feels like a completely different formula from last season, where it had slightly smaller issues with relevant, interesting, not filled-in backstories. It seems like now they're just throwing in the backstories to throw in the backstories. And yeah, it does seem like everything in the hatch should click more and have a deeper meaning, but it doesn't. Irrelevant is a perfect word.
