some Veronica Mars speculation
May. 4th, 2005 09:06 pmVeronica Mars speculation about the ending of episode 21, "A Trip to the Dentist", and about the finale. Spoilers for "A Trip to the Dentist" and the aired promo after the episode for the finale.
The more I think about it, the less the last scene makes sense if you take it as Logan trying to videotape them having sex. I tried to watch Logan after he and Veronica get split up during the party, but I couldn't see where he went. Still, to turn the cameras on during that time would require him to, the second Veronica talked to Madison, he would've had to run over to the poolhouse and run back. To rush off to ensure they were on just for the mere possibility that they would end up in the poolhouse having sex adds a whole other level of creepy to it. Plus, I can't imagine he'd be that presumptuous right after she told him she was raped (well, I guess she did explain to him that it wasn't really rape, but he knows what a traumatic experience it still must've been and how it obviously affected her) he would expect her to jump into bed with him, especially considering I doubt they've ever discussed having sex together. And, as many others have noted, if his plan was to tape them, then why tell Veronica about the salt lick and drugging Duncan? He had no idea she'd forgive him so easily, and it seemed to me like he was trying to get that off his chest before anything went any further, since he was feeling so guilty about it. It just doesn't make any sense to think that he'd set it up to record them, and then admit to doing things that have a great chance of angering/upsetting Veronica. And one last thing on this train of thought: others have noted that the cameras didn't seem to be on, either. Which would just mean that Logan took Veronica into a room to make out, and whether he knew about the cameras or not, he wasn't intending on taping them.
Also, reading other people's views of the episode, it's been noted that when Veronica looks at the second camera (not the one of the overhead shot of the bed, but the one that I believe is either at the foot or head of the bed), she doesn't look shocked at first. Instead, she leans in a little, gets a look at something, and then looks surprised and high-tails it out of there. I'm thinking that it could be one of two things: either A) whatever the camera's in triggered some kind of memory or clue about Lilly's murder, or B) the camera itself reminded her of something. Considering the previews have video images of her and Lilly dancing around, I'm thinking that might tie into it. Another thing that makes me think this is Logan saying "Lilly got this from me" when he was retrieving the key to the liquor cabinet. I rewatched the episode about an hour ago and looked through the previews again, and I definitely saw Veronica unhinging the thing (blah, blanking on the term for it) exactly like Logan did and retrieving it. I didn't look closely, so I didn't see what she was retrieving or even where it was, but I think it looked less like the poolhouse and more like a place that could be Lilly's room.
The only part of the episode that is deterring me from this line of thought is the very end. I'd think if Veronica thought she'd found a new clue, when she arrived home she wouldn't say "Honey, I'm home!" pretty relaxed, I'd think she'd be more like "Dad, I think I figured something out!" However, at the same time, if she really thought Logan was trying to tape them having sex, then again, I don't think she'd arrive home as relaxed as she seems. I don't think she'd go to her Dad or say anything about it, but I do think she would visibly... look different, I guess. More withdrawn? Quieter and more serious, I guess. Really, her attitude at the end doesn't make perfect sense for either scenario.
All season I haven't been able to decide who I thought killed Lilly, but with all this thought, Aaron makes the most sense to me. Actually, as I say this and think of the reasons why, I can shoot them down pretty quickly. But still, I'm kind of leaning towards him. Maybe just because whatever she saw (or whatever I think she saw; for all I know, I'm totally off-base in this all, and she really did get freaked out by the cameras, and Logan really was intending to tape them having sex) was in his poolhouse. But also, in the preview, Veronica has a gun and says "Call 911" (...or maybe it's just "the police". My ability to recall lines isn't that great). The only people I can see her have any reason to hold a gun up to would be Clarence Wiedman, possibly Jake Kane, or Aaron. I really don't see it for any of the teenagers, and she could totally take on Celeste or Lianne (or Lynn, if she suddenly reappears and it turns out she really didn't kill herself, and, in fact, she killed Lilly) without a gun, so I guess that's why my list is all adult males. Actually, if whoever it is is whomever killed Lilly, then I guess a gun could become necessary. Still, I remember one of the first people I thought of that she would hold a gun up to would be Aaron. I mean, he's clearly abusive and violent, and he was pretty creepy in that scene when he was driving Veronica home in M.A.D. It definitely works for me.
Unfortunately, I really love the character of Aaron (...never thought I'd say that about someone who abuses his own son. Bizarre), so I hope I'm wrong. But since I haven't really formed an opinion all season about who murdered Lilly, I'll choose him.
Heh. I love how the second I make any speculation or try to form ideas of why what I'm speccing would work, I instantly think of ways to shoot them down. I need to work on being a little more strong in my convictions, I think.
