Back from New York! It was really awesome. We did a bunch of tourist-y stuff, saw Vassar and loved it, and if you didn't listen to the phonepost I made yesterday, I GOT TO SEE RENT!
Saturday
Got in late afternoon/early evening-ish. Went to the hotel to check in and it turned out that we were booked a week later than from when we wanted, which also happened in San Francisco. In San Fransisco it was my mom's fault for not booking it correctly and not checking the verification stuff, but you think she would learn from that. This time she booked us over the phone and the person read it back correctly, but she still didn't actually check the reservation information, which is ridiculous, because it was very clear on the first page when it was for. sigh. But they did manage to find us rooms, so it worked out all right. I got my own room which was pretty awesome, and it was far enough away from my parents that they couldn't just come over whenever they wanted.
Sunday
Started off by walking through Central Park. We stopped by the Central Park Zoo because I wanted to since I haven't been to a zoo in ages. It's a pretty small zoo, but it was fun. Then we kept going and made it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and spent a few hours there, which was very cool (although you cannot convince me that a canvas painted all one color [a yucky black/purple/brown color at that] is art and deserves to be hanging in the Met). I think that's pretty much all we did.
I think Sunday was the day the idea of going to a show was brought up. My mom thought it might be cool to try to see something, so we picked up some brochures at the hotel to see what was playing and mine I think was old because it didn't have Rent. But anyways, my mom said that The Producers might be good and I agreed that I'd be interested in seeing that, and in any case anything else I might want to see I've seen already, like Wicked, and then I think I said I would be interested in seeing Rent though, since seeing it on stage is so different from seeing it on the screen, but I said that it wasn't in my brochure and it was in my mom's. So basically Sunday our first two choices for seeing something were The Producers and Rent.
Monday
Drove up to Vassar in the morning (it's about a two hour drive from NYC). I really loved it there. It's a beautiful campus, and I don't know. I just liked everything they said about it. It has an open curriculum which is pretty awesome. So yeah, I'm really hoping I get in.
I think Monday was when I told my parents that I really, really wanted to see Rent and The Producers would be ok but Rent was my number one choice, and my parents were fine with that. I wasn't very convinced we would actually be able to go, though, since it's a popular show and we'd be getting tickets like the night before (actually, we didn't even end up getting them until the morning of).
Tuesday
Checked out tickets for Rent, and the hotel didn't have any tickets come up, but they said they'd contact a ticket broker if we liked and they could see what they could do and call us back.
Went on a bus tour of downtown NYC at around 10:30ish. The tour guide was insanely irritating. I don't even know how to describe why she was so irritating, but trust me that she was. We got off at the World Trade Center site, looked around there a bit, and then had lunch. My dad checked his messages and the hotel called saying they had managed to find us tickets for Rent. I was pretty shocked, because I was certain that it wouldn't happen and I was trying not to get my hopes up.
We didn't really have anything to do after lunch, so we wandered around a bit, got back on the bus tour with a different guide who was a million times better, went to the NBC store, and then went to the Museum of Television and Radio for a few hours and watched two screenings, one on television news coverage and the other on advertisements from 1945 to 2004.
After that, we saw Rent. Ah, it was fucking amazing. My love for Rent had faded a bit just because I've been obsessing over other things, but man did seeing Rent on stage reawaken my love for it. I was worried I wouldn't like the cast because I'm so used to the movie cast (considering I have seen the movie like 5 times and have listened to the movie soundtrack non-stop) but I ended up really loving them. It was just so freaking amazing. And it was kind of cool too since I haven't really listened to the original broadway cast recording very much, so there were a lot of songs that were unfamiliar to me, and things are changed from the musical to the movie, so it was kind of like seeing something new. I don't think I said that very well, but oh well. In any case, it was awesome, and I really, really want to see it again now.
Wednesday
Didn't really do anything. Straight from the hotel to the airport, and then home.

It's depressing to know I'll be on a plane again in less than two days. I hate flying. bah.

Date: 2006-08-10 12:45 am (UTC)I'm so glad you got to see Rent! I'll be seeing it next month, touring cast that is. One day I WILL get my butt to New York and see it there. I wish I hadn't watched so many bootlegs of the show though. It'll still be amazing, I'm sure. Too bad you missed Matt Caplan. He had played Mark for 8 years! I've never heard of anyone sticking around that long. I believe his last day was Saturday. I don't particularly care for the guy but he plays Mark well for the most part. He's the best Mark out of everyone who has played him after Anthony Rapp did. He's not anywhere close to being as awesome as Anthony though. :)

Date: 2006-08-10 01:55 am (UTC)Ah, that's awesome you're going to see it next month. It's such a great show, I want to just see it over and over now. That does suck that I missed Matt Caplan, but the guy who played Mark wasn't bad, I thought. I mean, obviously Anthony Rapp would be better, but I thought he wasn't bad. In any case, it was a very enjoyable show.

Date: 2006-08-10 11:29 pm (UTC)See, I've always hated flying. I used to get really airsick, and I don't anymore, but I still feel really crappy after flying, and it's just not a fun experience for me. At least the flight to Minnesota should only be about 3 hours, I think.
