Jul. 4th, 2007 04:35 pmSo from Saturday to today I spent watching seasons 5-7 of The West Wing.
Actually, I kind of don't know what to say, but I feel like I need to say something. I just... yeah. This was a really amazing show, and I didn't think I'd get into it as I did, but... well, I did. I ended up loving nearly all the characters and a lot of the storylines. I do think that season 5 is the weakest season, as everyone seems to say, but I don't think it's really awful. It's just kind of boring. I think part of that is that it doesn't seem to have any real overarching storyline. At least, that's it for me. I mean seasons 6 and 7 I really got drawn into all the campaign stuff (of course I really love that stuff even in real life) and I really loved the storyline about everyone finding out about the MS back in late season 2/early season 3, and his campaigning and getting re-elected in late season 3/early season 4. But in season 5 there only seemed to be the first 3 episodes about getting Bartlet back in power and then the last 2 about Gaza, but I don't remember any storylines that seemed to last or define the season. (Then again, I might not have been paying close enough attention. As I said, it was kind of boring.)
I was really happy that Josh and Donna finally got to be together at the end of season 7. I kind of wish we had gotten a little more time to see them actually being a couple (I mean, I know it's not the Josh and Donna show, but they did spend a pretty long time building it up, and I think they could've been given just a little more attention.), but I am really just happy they got together at all.
I was also really happy about C.J. and Danny. I loved them back in season 1 and I loved how Danny continued to appear throughout the series. The resolution to their storyline and them finally getting a chance to be together was very satisfying.
I keep starting paragraphs in my head with "I loved (insert character here)" but it's just... I loved every character. I loved Josh and Donna and C.J. and Leo and Sam and Charlie and Toby and god I don't think I can list every character I loved because there were a lot.
I guess I can go to what I don't love, because it's a shorter list. I didn't really like Kate. I didn't really dislike her either, but I just didn't really see the purpose of her. I really didn't understand why she was in the credits in the sixth season because we barely found out anything about her. She was just kind of boring to me. I liked her in the seventh season more when she and Will started dating because they were pretty cute, but overall I just didn't care about her.
Um, I'm trying to think of what else. There were many more things I didn't love, that one just kind of stuck out. Way back during season 1 I didn't like Mandy (which I think I mentioned after I finished season 1) but she disappeared so that wasn't really an issue. I never really liked Amy, and not even when she wasn't with Josh, and I'm not really sure why. She just always kind of bugged me. In terms of storylines, I didn't like that C.J. became Chief of Staff because it didn't make any sense other than it being a convenient way for Josh to be free to manage Santos's campaign. I didn't like the Toby storyline during season 7 (mostly because I like Toby and wanted to see more of him that season).
I really liked how often they brought back characters. Like with Danny and Lord Marbury and even people like Oliver Babbish. It was just really nice because it made sense that these characters would still exist in this world and they wouldn't all just suddenly disappear and be replaced by new characters in the same jobs. I mean, occasionally they did have to do that, but overall I think they did a good job in bringing characters back.
Anyways, I guess that's all I really had to say. It wasn't a perfect show, but it was pretty awesome. My favorite seasons I think were season 2 and 3, but I liked 4 a lot, too. I'm kind of sad now that I finished it all and there aren't anymore episodes left, but it was nice while it lasted.
Remind me not to do anything like that again anytime soon. I spent a lot of that time having no idea what day it was but being very convinced that it was a day later than it really was. I was pretty surprised this morning to find out it was July 4th. I'm trying to figure out what to do next now. I feel like watching more new TV (I think up next is Dexter or Skins), but I also think it might be a good idea to take a little break and interact with the real world for a day or so, since I've just been jumping from show to show for the past week or so now. I don't know. We'll see, I guess. No starting any seven season shows, that's for sure.
