brokenrecordShort random TV reactions (not of everything I've watched in the past few days, but the things I actually have stuff to say about:
That was honestly kind of disappointing, and I say that as someone who is absolutely ridiculous in love and obsessed with this show. I find stuff to adore about every episode; I even like episodes that most people don't like The Front Porch. And in rewatch, I'll probably find more things I like about this episode, but on first reaction I was pretty much just like "...what?" The weirdest part for me was that I liked Ted's storyline much more than the B-plot with Robin and Barney. I get that part of the humor in the B-plot was that neither Robin nor Lily reacted as Barney or Marshall expected them to. My problem with it is that the joke doesn't work if it doesn't seem true to their characters, you know? And I can buy Lily reacting as she did, but I couldn't buy Robin's reaction. But even if they were set on that reaction, the resolution of the storyline was... well, nonexistent. I mean, did I miss something, or did it end with Barney just repeating Robin was the best ever and ignoring her saying "This is not okay"? Is this going to come up again in the next episode? Because otherwise, leaving it like that makes no sense. And she kept saying she wasn't okay with it, but she didn't explain. I don't know. I'm all for getting lots of humor out of their relationship due to how much both of them fail at being in relationships, and last week was an awesome example of it, but this week not so much.
Ted's plot was definitely more interesting. Maybe it's because I've loved that actress since she was Valerie on Sabrina the Teenage Witch (and I also really loved her in Grosse Pointe, which is one of my favorite comedies ever). I would've liked to see her in future episodes, but I guess I get the message they were going for there.
I continue to adore Sheldon and Raj and Penny when she's with Sheldon, and hate Leonard and Leonard/Penny. And the thing is, even ignoring the fact that I ship Sheldon/Penny, I also don't like Leonard/Penny because it makes me really hate Leonard. And I normally like Leonard well enough and want to continue to like him! But when he's with Penny, that's ALL he cares about. So I hated last week for the reasons I already stated last week, and I didn't like him this week either. When he was like "I could throw a rock and find 3 better friends than you guys" or whatever I was like "OH BECAUSE YOU'RE SUCH A GREAT EXAMPLE OF BEING A GOOD FRIEND." And am I supposed to be rooting for Leonard and Penny when they have to get so drunk they're vomiting to want to have sex with each other? Of course, I'm sure the end of the episode was supposed to signify "Oh look, everything's fine now, they really do want each other! This time the sex is going to be awesome!" but whatever. That doesn't negate the entire two previous episodes. And they still have zero chemistry. When they're kissing supposedly passionately, I feel nothing.
The plot with Sheldon, Raj, and Howard was much better, although I'm still having trouble accepting that Sheldon was wrong about something. The Sheldon/Penny scene was my favorite of the episode. Seriously, if your reaction to when someone suggests you and your boyfriend might be better as friends is basically "Yeah, that would be a lot easier" and you don't care enough to be like "But I'm so in love with him, I couldn't possibly just be friends with him!" or whatever, there's something wrong. Just saying. And I loved how many times this episode (and for a few episodes now) Sheldon made jokes! See, he's totally progressing! He's recognizing sarcasm and making jokes and everything. He's developing, just... slowly!Perhaps he will slowly develop into a relationship with Penny! My favorite line of the episode was (paraphrased) "That was a joke. It was supposed to reduce the tension. You're welcome." Oh, Sheldon. I will continue watching this show even if Penny and Leonard get married and have 100 kids and live happily ever after just for Sheldon being his amazing self.
OK SERIOUSLY CAN CAPPIE AND CASEY JUST GET TOGETHER ALREADY? I mean, on the one hand, I love them dragging it out because couples tend to be more interesting to me before they get together than after. But at the same time, I would like to see the two of them actually function in a relationship on the show rather than getting together in the last 5 minutes of the series finale, you know? And I am confident they'll get together eventually because they've already dragged it out this long, but I'm not confident we'll actually get to see them together, which I want. And so far they've been having them have like one interaction an episode, but in last night's there was nothing. Although I did appreciate the fact that Cappie had that pin, which I'm assuming was for Casey and not Rebecca. BUT STILL. COME ON.
I am really liking that Evan and Cappie have really reconciled, though. I'm hoping once Casey and Cappie finally do get together, Evan's cool with it, because I like Evan (even though he's a douche like 95% of the time).
Also, I'm confused by Jordan suddenly applying to study abroad. I get her reasoning, but... she's a freshman. At my school you have to be at least a sophomore, and I remember when I was visiting colleges back in high school, all of them were like "Junior year is typically the year students study abroad" which... is true here, too. (You might not even be able to study abroad as a sophomore, I don't know, but I definitely know you can't as a freshman.) I was expecting the e-mail at the end to be like "...uh, you're in the first semester of your freshman year. Wait until you're a junior." I'm also not sure what to take from that since we didn't see the e-mail; are we supposed to suspect Rusty of lying to her because he wants her to stay, or should we be taking it at face value? Whatever, I don't really care about their relationship at all, it was just kind of a weird moment.
I love everything Beaver is involved in. I also really like Heath and want to see more of him. And I'm just realizing Calvin wasn't in the episode at all. I apparently didn't miss him, but I do really like his storyline right now, so more of that please!
I was going to write something about Mad Men, but then I realized my reaction was going to be exactly the same as my reactions for the last 2 weeks, so... if you want to know what I thought, then check those. I'm nothing if not predictable! I liked House (I'm liking that they didn't totally rush into him coming back) and Gossip Girl was fine (like, I can't think of anything I disliked and I enjoyed watching it, but I also don't really care about anything that happens? I don't know. I'm not considering giving it up or anything, I'm just not as into it as I used to be).
The professor I was going to talk to today about post-college stuff wasn't there when I checked her office, and I don't have any more classes today and don't really feel like going on campus again on the off-chance that she'll be there, so I think I'll wait until tomorrow or Thursday afternoon. I mean, it's not like I have to have this all figured out today, but I know I'm going to keep worrying and thinking about it until I talk to someone about it who actually knows the field and can give me advice, so I'd like to do it sooner rather than later. Plus, she's the chair of the psych department and I have a question about a class that was going to be offered this year but isn't anymore which I really need for both the psych major and general ed requirements, so I need to ask her about that. So I might as well talk to her now rather than wait until next semester or even next month or whatever.
My parents are arriving a week from Thursday for parents' weekend. I can't believe that's already here. It feels like they just left and the semester just started. It'll be nice to see them, anyways. I'm looking forward to them coming.
First exam of the semester tomorrow in German. I'm nervous. I hope it goes all right.

Date: 2009-09-29 11:22 pm (UTC)Robin's reaction was a bit odd, mainly cause she wouldn't explain why it wasn't ok, just implied it should be obvious. Robin has never been shy about speaking her opinion. I don't find it strange that it bothered her though - that Barney frequents a strip club, often by himself. As "cool" as she is, I think we forget anymore that she was tame enough to fall in love and be happy with Ted.
BBT: Leonard/Penny is really getting on my nerves, mainly because I agree with you about the ZERO romantic chemistry. The writers have blinders on, they don't understand why more people aren't rooting for this relationship, since it was intended from the beginning, but some of the best surprises are found later on in a series (like Chandler/Monica from Friends).
Sheldon being wrong this one time didn't bother me. I think the fun was taking someone who is always right, and bringing them out of that comfortable confidence for a moment. How would he react to it? I loved the little tidbit that he keeps a safety deposit box for his most valuable comic books. He's so cute!

Date: 2009-09-29 11:37 pm (UTC)Exactly! I don't so much have a problem with her reaction as long as it's not just "This is not okay." The whole thing was just her saying "No" and him saying "You're awesome!" and there absolutely zero communication and it was just weird.
I know, seriously. I mean, all the attention the show gets, too, is pretty much due to Sheldon, and there's a lot of Sheldon/Penny buzz. On the other hand, all the critical attention to Leonard/Penny has pretty much been "This is the one thing bringing the show down. They have no chemistry. They are boring."
It didn't bother me that he was wrong, but it kind of threw me for a loop! It was just so unusual that he'd be wrong. And I adored his whole attitude about having to give the comic book up and explaining to Penny the situation (whatever he said about losing a bet because of a cricket or something, I don't know, the line wasn't that amazing, but his delivery was awesome). I love Sheldon so much.
