What an awesome, awesome day. I saw Women's Skate Vert Best Trick, an Inline (rollerskates) Demo, Men's Skate Best Trick in which Bob Burnquist won gold, and I then met Bob Burnquist. omg I love the X Games.
My mom and I arrived at around 12:40. The line was way shorter than yesterday, but I'm assuming that's because we were so much earlier, and Women's Skate Vert Best Trick was the event going on and that's not nearly as popular as Men's Skate Vert or Best Trick.
Anyways, we found our seats. They were kind of like our seats last time, except higher up and on the opposite side. I could see more of the ramp, but not everything. It was fine, though. I'd rather have that than not go at all. As I said, the Women's Skate Vert Best Trick was going on. They were pretty impressive. Especially Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins. She's only 15, she won the gold medal last year, when she was 14, she was skating with a broken wrist (or maybe arm. Whatever, close enough), and she still got the silver. Insane.
Women's Skate Vert Best Trick (...I think this may have just been vert, not best trick, because that's what it's called on the official site, but... it seemed like a best trick competition! That's how I'm labeling it. Screw the site.)
1. Cara-Beth Burnside
2. Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins
3. Mimi Knoop
4. Jen O'Brien
5. Holly Lyons
Jen O'Brien is Bob Burnquist's girlfriend, except they're less like... boyfriend and girlfriend and more as close as you can get to being married without actually being married. They say that they actually consider themselves to be married and don't feel the need to go through the ceremony and all to make it official. He was there during the session, supporting her, which I found very sweet. Um, I actually don't have much to say about the event. It was awesome, but I wasn't paying incredibly close attention to it, and I only saw about half of it. So. Yes.
After that we had about half an hour until the inline demo, and so they showed us what was going on at the Home Depot Center with the Moto X freestyle prelims. Whee, Travis Pastrana! I adore him. And wtf MIKE METZGER! Not competing, but acting as one of the commentators. I don't think he was during the broadcast version (though I could be wrong - I did fastforward through it. I had already seen most of it and it was only prelims and I had so much other stuff to catch up on, so I decided not to bother), it seemed as he was just a... like liaison between the Home Depot Center and the Staples Center. I AM SO CONFUSED WHAT IS GOING ON?! Um, but yeah. After that, the inline demo started.
I don't have any results for this, since it was just a demo (wtf is there no actual inline competition this year?! I love inline! It never gets the attention it deserves. I mean, seriously, who cares about supercross or Moto X Step Up? Give the attention to inline [AND SKATE BEST TRICK WHICH OMG WAS IT JUST ME OR WAS THERE NO COVERAGE OF IT?! Glad I went, at least, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to see it at all.] instead!). It was really impressive, though.
Best moment: Fabiola Da Silva (Sandro Dias's girlfriend!) being the first woman ever to successfully land a double backflip in competition. She tried twice, missed both times, but on the third... man, it was insane. It was just... I can't describe it. Felt so amazing to be apart of that.
The whole demo was really amazing, though. Hee, but my mom was so amusing during it. She never watches this kind of stuff, but she was totally gasping and cheering along with everyone else. She totally got into it. It was awesome. I love my mom.
After the demo, some skateboarders started coming out, and then it was time for Skateboard Best Trick.
Skateboard Best Trick
1. Bob Burnquist
2. Colin McKay
3. Pierre-Luc Gagnon
4. Sandro Dias
5. Rune Glifberg
6. Shaun White
7. Bucky Lasek
8. Jake Brown
OMG BOB BURNQUIST WON GOLD!!! :D The last time he won gold at best trick I believe it was 2001. Maybe 2000. Awhile ago, though. I was so fucking proud of him. And that trick was insane. He totally deserved the gold. The other trick he pulled was pretty crazy awesome as well.
Although, hello, speaking of crazy awesome: SHAUN WHITE ATTEMPTED A 1080 LIKE 29 TIMES! And the truly insane part? He was really close to making it. I think he will. He was seriously so close, it looks like he can do it with some more practice. I cannot wait to see him pull it off. It'll be fucking insane.
Anyways, so before the best trick competition started, there was an announcement that Bob Burnquist and Bucky Lasek would be signing autographs at 5:00, after the competition. Before I had been kind of planning on watching the BMX Best Trick, but... I figured I could just watch that on TV (EXCEPT I COULDN'T BECAUSE THEY FUCKING DIDN'T AIR THAT EITHER. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU, ESPN?! YOUR COVERAGE IS USUALLY SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS!). How many chances would I have to meet Bucky Lasek and Bob Burnquist? After the competition, though, Shaun White was still trying for the 1080 and I wanted to stick around to see if he could pull it, so my mom left to stand in line for me (omg have I mentioned how much I love my mom?). After about 15 minutes, I went out to find her.
The line was huge. I mean, not very surprising. Bucky Lasek and Bob Burnquist are two of the biggest names in skateboarding, after all. Around 4:45, a guy working the event came to where we were standing in line and told us that it was pretty unlikely that we would get autographs, since they could only go until 6 because everyone had to be out of the venue at a certain time. He told us that under no circumstances would they sign past 6. He also told us that Pierre-Luc Gagnon and Rune Glifberg were signing at a nearby booth and the line there was shorter and we'd definitely get an autograph if we went over there. I did consider it, but I decided that Bob's my favorite skateboarder and I love Bucky just as much, and I'd take that chance.
We waited around. 5:00 came and went and there was no sign of either Bob or Bucky. During this wait, Cara-Beth Burnside, the winner of the Women's Skate Vert Best Trick competition, was walking around, so I went over to her and got this card she was giving out signed. I mean, if I couldn't get Bob and Bucky's signatures, at least I could get someone's. And she was pretty fucking awesome.
At 5:30, we finally saw Bob walk into the tent where he'd be signing. The line didn't move until about 5:40, though. At around 5:35, a guy came down the line and told us that Bucky wouldn't be signing because his wrist was bothering him (I noticed it was all bandaged up during the best trick competition. Don't know if it was like that at the vert competition last night, but I think it was). I had hoped that that would make some of the people in front of us leave, but it didn't. We were also told again that it was very unlikely we'd be getting autographs.
We started moving up slowly. We were still nowhere near Bob. At 5:50 another person came down the line to a little ways in front of us and told us definitively that there was no chance in hell we'd get anything signed, as we were so far back and they absolutely had to stop at 6:00 and that we should all leave because there was no point in staying in line. A few groups left, but not many. We continued to move up.
We were told again at 5:53 (yes, I was looking at my watch excessively, and yes, I am dragging this on far longer than I should, as you all already know that I did get to meet Bob) that there was no chance we'd get to meet him and why didn't we all just leave already?
At 5:57 we were waaay farther up (a good number of people left the line), but we definitely weren't within 3 minutes of Bob. Once again we were told there was no chance in waiting, and why were we wasting our time? I'm persistent, though, and my mom was encouraging me to stay in line, too. She said that in cases like this, it's good to stay persistent. (omg I love my mom. This must be mentioned 409203984 times.)
We continued to move up. I looked at my watch at one point and saw that it was 6:01. I seriously didn't think I'd get anything signed. I mean, I hadn't really believed it the entire time I was in line (I'm so fucking pessimistic), and... I still didn't. But I figured, why not try? Still, didn't believe I'd get to meet him.
At 6:10, someone went to the back of the line and informed everyone that Bob Burnquist had agreed to stay until all of us left in line had met him. Yeah. So, I am totally in love with Bob Burnquist. Like, I didn't think it was possible for me to love him anymore than I already did, but... I do now. At this point, I went into a state of shock (this lasted for about another 3 hours). My mom asked me how to work my camera so she could take a picture of us.
At 6:20ish (I don't know the exact time, because OMG I NO LONGER HAD TO KEEP FRETTING OVER THE TIME ON MY WATCH!) we entered the tent. Bob Burnquist was sitting on this couch-type thing. He had these like... mini-posters of him and was signing them. I had been planning on getting my ticket signed, but those were much cooler, so I decided to get that signed instead.
Yeah, so then it was finally my turn. I walked up and sat down next to him on the couch. Ok, so before I go on, let me say that Bob Burnquist had spent nearly an hour signing hundreds of people's stuff just after skating for an hour and falling repeatedly and that morning he had participated in the Skateboard Big Air Prelims (he qualified first!!! :D This is becoming a much better games for Bob than last year) where I'm sure he fell, and that's from huge heights, and it was the day after the skate vert competition, and yeah. The point I'm trying to make? I figure he'd be totally tired and exhausted and... just blah. But geez, I sat down on the couch and he turned to look at me and said "Hi!" enthusiastically with this huge grin on his face. Nicest. Guy. Ever. I can't believe he was in such good spirts (though I suppose winning the gold medal in best trick helped with that ;)) after the past 2 days. Before he signed the thing, I said "Congratulations on your win today!" and he grinned again and said "Thanks!" Then he signed the mini-poster and handed it to me and then my mom took a picture of us and as I was standing up, he patted my back. I told him "Thank you!" and then it was over. Could not stop grinning until we reached the car (which was a very, very long walk away). Then I went into a state of shock (...or I might've been in a state of shock during the entire autograph process) where the only thought going through my mind was "I met Bob Burnquist." Seriously. That kept repeating in my head over and over and over. Then I had to look at the picture my mom took to make sure what just had happened was real.
So. Yeah. I met Bob Burnquist, even after I was told repeatedly that there was no chance in hell it would happen. Best fucking day ever. Watching best trick was way better than vert, too. I mean, I loved watching vert yesterday, but best trick... I mean, it's completely different. Just the energy in the stadium each time Shaun attempted a 1080 and how my heart couldn't stop pounding and just... everything. I got so much more into the best trick. I like them about equally on TV, but man... best trick is definitely the far more enjoyable to see live.
All right, now for the events I watched when I got home. But first, wtf? They didn't air either the BMX best trick OR the skate best trick events! HOW THE FUCK DO YOU NOT SHOW THOSE!? I mean, I think skate best trick is my absolute favorite event. HOW CAN YOU NOT SHOW THAT!? What the hell?! That pisses me off. I'm just glad that I actually did get to go to the best trick and not being able to find anyone to go and people who told me they'd go backing out for no reason didn't fuck that up. Anyways, now for the stuff I watched at home.
1. Dave Mirra - 89.33
2. Scotty Cranmer - 89.00
3. Ryan Nyquist - 88.66
4. Ryan Guettler - 88.33
5. Steve McCann - 88.00
6. Josh Harrington - 86.00
7. Morgan Wade - 85.66
8. Allan Cooke - 84.33
9. Corey Martinez - 83.66
10. Gary Young - 82.66
What the hell, they didn't how any of Allan Cooke's runs! I remember really liking him last year. I mean, X Games coverage is still a million times better than Gravity Games coverage, but geez. I wanted to see him ride! [pissed]
Aw, man, I love Ryan Guettler. I don't know why. I remember how fucking awesome he was last year, though. I love Ryan Nyquist too, though, so I'm glad he medaled, even if he did get a bronze. Scotty Cranmer's second run was fucking crazy. I actually kind of thought it was better than Dave Mirra's first, but... eh. What do I know? I do like Dave Mirra, though, and his run was pretty awesome, so I'm not too unhappy with him getting gold. I remember Morgan Wade being absolutely insane last year. Too bad he screwed up this year. :(
BMX Dirt Results
1. Corey Bohan - 92.66
2. Chris Doyle - 89.33
3. Ryan Guettler - 88.66
4. Colin Mackay - 88.33
5. T.J. Lavin - 87.33
6. Mike Aitken - 87.00
7. Kye Forte - 86.66
7. Brian Foster - 86.66
9. Cory Nastazio - 84.66
10. Ryan Nyquist - 82.33
Man, poor Ryan Nyquist. Not the best year at X Games for him (though, a bronze in park is nothing to be ashamed of).
Yay for Ryan Guettler's bronze! I seriously have no idea why I love him, but I totally do. He's awesome.
Corey Bohan - geez. There are no words. That last run was absolutely insane. I really didn't think he'd put on a third run good enough to beat Chris Doyle, but... geez. That run was amazing.
Also, yay that I didn't miss this. I was really afraid that this had been shown in the morning broadcast that I didn't record. But luckily it wasn't and I got to see it. It's my favorite of all the BMX events, BMX park coming in a close second. I don't care as much for Bike Vert/Vert Best Trick. I like it, I just don't like it nearly as much.
Moto X Freesylte Results
1. Travis Pastrana - 92.80
2. Kenny Bartram - 92.00
3. Nate Adams - 90.80
4. Jeremy Stenberg - 90.60
5. Adam Jones - 89.20
Yes! :DDD Oh, man, I was totally cheering at this. I am so fucking ecstatic that Travis won. I mean, last year was just... eck. He crashed and he had a concussion and a bunch of other injuries and he still ended up competing the next day in the finals and he even managed to win the silver after all that, but... I was really rooting for him to take the gold this year. And he did! Definitely deserved it, too. His runs are always so spectacular. I can't wait till next year. Especially since maybe he'll FINALLY throw the double backflip that, by that point, people will have been talking about him doing for 2 years.
I think I mentioned in my comments on Moto X Best Trick that I have an irrational dislike for Kenny Bartram, but I must say he really impressed me tonight. I still love that side-backflip-thing. It's insane. And I do think he put on a better run than Nate Adams. So yeah, I'm satisfied with him getting the silver.
Nate Adams was really... odd today. I mean, usually my problem with him is that while he has absolutely perfect technical abilities, he always just looks so... well, technical. He doesn't really have a style, and he never looks like he's enjoying himself. Today, though, he didn't even have the technical abilities. I mean, he was great, but not nearly as amazing as I've seen him before. They did say that he broke his toe earlier in the prelims which probably had something to do with it, and that he's recovering from a broken femur from about 8 months ago. He did do well, though, and deserved the bronze.

Bob Burnquist. This was during the Women's Skate Vert Best Trick, when he came out to cheer on Jen O'Brien.

Holly Lyons. She won 5th in the Womens Vert Skate Best Trick event.

Fabiola da Silva is person you can see above the rest in the black (not the person that's blocked). Sandro Dias is in the yellow shirt to the right, rubbing his head. There was a much better shot of them together, but it turned out way too blurry.

One of the inline skaters. I don't know who he is. :(

Another inline skater. I don't know who he is either, omg. :(

Shaun White, Bucky Lasek, and Rune Glifberg.

Shaun White and Bucky Lasek.

Rune Glifberg. I think Colin McKay is cut off on the left side, too.

Shaun White turned around, Jake Brown skating in front of Bucky Lasek, and Colin McKay following Jake.

Colin McKay.

Bucky Lasek.

Bucky Lasek and Shaun White.

Shaun White and Bucky Lasek. Also, I think that white blur at the bottom is Pierre-Luc Gagnon.

Colin McKay.

Bucky Lasek.

Sandro Dias. Yeah, incredibly blurry, but I liked the shot anyways.

Bob Burnquist. You can also see Colin McKay, I believe, walking at the bottom. Another blurry shot, but I still like it, so I'm posting it.

Bob Burnquist and Bucky Lasek. Yes, yes, blurry. But it's Bob and Bucky! I was finally able to see them on the same side, unlike yesterday! And this was the least blurry of all the shots I took of them. And, come on, I had to include a Bob/Bucky shot.

Bob Burnquist.

Rune Glifberg.

Jake Brown.

Bob Burnquist and me, omg. Oh, and btw Annie, I forgot to mention that Bob told me that he totally loves Bucky and he definitely wasn't having an affair with Sandro or seducing Andy yesterday. So, you know. Just so you know that you were totally and completely wrong. And yes, he did tell me this with his girlfriend/wife sitting right next to him. He is very open with his Bucky love.

The mini-poster Bob Burnquist signed.
Oh, but I forgot to mention, about half-way into the skateboard vert best trick competition, Pierre-Luc Gagnon changed from a white t-shirt to a black t-shirt. It was totally random and totally confusing, because there were already a good number of people in black t-shirts and another guy in a white t-shirt and COULDN'T YOU HAVE CHANGED TO A RED OR YELLOW T-SHIRT, PIERRE-LUC, AND MADE THINGS EASIER TO UNDERSTAND?! sigh. ...uh, yes. :)
Lastly, hi. Did they have to keep showing Tony Hawk's 900 during the breaks on the screen when we were inside? I mean, it wasn't all they showed, but they showed it a fair amount. And dude, that seriously makes me cry. Um, in a happy way, though. It was just so fucking amazing and seeing all the fucking support from the other skaters (that's one reason why skateboarding's my favorite event at X Games; you really don't see nearly as much... support for the other competitors in the other events. I mean, you do see it, but it's just... I don't know. They always seem so much less friendly to me.) and the crowd and how he kept going after it and his expression when he finally did it and... geez. It makes me all teary. So yeah, you didn't need to show me that 9 bajillion times and make me have to stop myself from getting all teary and emotional. Why yes, I am aware that I am totally pathetic.
Skateboard big air tomorrow! ...I will not be there, though. My last day of live X Games (until next year). Man am I glad that I got tickets, though. These two days have been so fucking awesome. I'm so happy and so thankful and so... geez. But yeah. I'm really looking forward to skateboard big air. I mean, first, Bob qualified first in the prelims, and Bucky qualified second. Bucky didn't compete last year, either, so this makes me very, very happy. And last year Bob was injured so he performed pretty poorly. But he's qualified first! This is of course after the top 3 from last year who made it in automatically and didn't have to do the pre-lims thing this morning. But still! And I think it'll be a lot more insane after everyone's already tried the ramp out before. I mean, last year it was this brand new thing, but this year, it's not like... such a new concept, I guess. They've had a year to think about it and work on things and such. So yeah. Should be fun to watch. :D
Ok, now I need to go make some more X Games icons even though I'll only use them like twice a year (now and the Gravity Games). Then maybe I'll have a good number of icons and can make an icon post tomorrow (insanity!).
My mom and I arrived at around 12:40. The line was way shorter than yesterday, but I'm assuming that's because we were so much earlier, and Women's Skate Vert Best Trick was the event going on and that's not nearly as popular as Men's Skate Vert or Best Trick.
