So I wrote this up like a month ago and was just waiting for the Doctor Who finale to post, but then it came and I totally forgot about it. But anyways, since I did a short review of all the shows I watched last year, I figured I'd do the same for this year. There are spoilers, so if you haven't seen all of a TV show that aired this year then you might not want to read it (the shows under the cut are Battlestar Galactica, The Black Donnellys, Doctor Who, Gilmore Girls, Heroes, House, Lost, My Name is Earl, The O.C., The Office, Prison Break, Studio 60, Supernatural, Torchwood, Ugly Betty, and Veronica Mars).
Battlestar Galactica: In retrospect, I didn't really enjoy this season. I think it had its moments, but I started finding it a chore to watch the episodes and getting weeks behind on the new episodes (although part of that was due to it moving to Sundays at 10, and I hate watching TV on Sunday nights, and I hate watching TV at 10, so it was pretty much the worst timeslot ever for me). The dynamic and tone was just so different from last season, and I mean I realize that it had to be because such a huge shift happened, but I didn't really enjoy it. The last like... two episodes were brilliant, though, and I was incredibly happy that Kara was back because she was one of my favorite characters before and I hated that she was dead. As much as I didn't really enjoy this season, I am sad that next season is the last season, and I'm hoping this show goes out on a high note.
The Black Donnellys: I absolutely adored the original pilot, I thought it was absolutely brilliant, but unfortunately, I don't think any of the following episodes were as good of quality as that first episode. I still liked the show, but my obsession died off pretty quickly. It turns out that it didn't really matter, though, as it was as good as gone the second it aired. I totally adored Kevin and I really liked Tommy too, and I thought the actors were all really good, and the pilot was just so amazing, and I don't know why the rest of the episodes couldn't have been just as good, but oh well. I enjoyed it while it lasted.
Doctor Who: I almost didn't want to watch this season (actually a little more than almost) with Rose gone because I loved her so much, and her and the Doctor together. And it was tough the first few episodes, and even though I liked Martha a lot, I still missed Rose. It did help that this season was pretty kickass; the last five or so episodes were brilliant, and there were some very good earlier ones too, like the Shakespeare one. And Jack! There was Jack! And the Master was so much fun and I loved the idea of next season the Master being the Doctor's companion (even though that lasted about 2 seconds until the Master refused to regenerate). So overall it was a good season, probably better than last season overall, but I love Rose and Ten so much that it's hard for me to really judge it. I was really surprised that Martha decided not to continue with the Doctor, but I'm kind of proud of her, in a sense, that she did. So does this mean there'll be a new companion next season? Or will they find a way to bring her back? I'm actually kind of looking forward to a new companion. I loved Rose a lot, but I got used to not seeing her on the show what with Martha, and I liked Martha lot, as I said, but I think I could accept a new companion a lot easier now. I wanted Jack to accept the Doctor's offer so much even though I knew there was no chance of that happening because of Torchwood. But as long as there's Jack/Ianto on Torchwood next season, I guess I won't be terribly upset. But yeah, I'm interested in seeing what happens next season, because it's kind of all up in the air, right now.
Gilmore Girls: I started watching this from the very first episode, when I was in first grade, so it feels really weird for it to be over. Especially since it's like the last of the shows I started watching at the end of elementary school/beginning of middle school to end. This season wasn't as good as the earlier ones, and I didn't enjoy the whole Christopher/Lorelai storyline (there were totally ways they could've dealt with the season 6 finale that got rid of Christopher and DIDN'T INVOLVE HIM AND LORELAI GETTING MARRIED. GAH). I ended up really liking Logan and Rory/Logan a lot this season, and actually Rory a lot more than I have in the past few years. There were some really brilliant episodes in the second half of the season and I thought the finale was incredibly fitting. I'm actually kind of glad it ended where it did because I don't see where they could've gone with the show in another season. It ended on a high note, and I'm glad for that. It had a nice long run, and it was a wonderful show for many seasons.
Heroes: I watched the pilot during the summer and liked the show all right, but it seemed to take itself too seriously and I didn't think it was likely I'd stick with it all season. But I'm glad I did, because it got a lot better, and it stopped taking itself so seriously. Hiro is just about the best character ever created, and I love Hiro and Ando's friendship. The show had some characters I wasn't much of a fan of (I really wanted Nikki/Jessica and Matt to be killed off after, like, the 2nd episode) but there were other characters I loved ridiculous amounts to make up for them. Some of the episodes weren't that good, but there were a lot of really excellent ones. My favorite moments were always when they would meet up and I hope there's more of that next season and they're not all split up again. Nathan and Hiro is maybe the most hilarious thing ever. I'm looking forward to seeing where they go with the show next season.
House: Um, so I really, really love Chase/Cameron? Like, a lot? I think part of it is just me hating House/Cameron so much and if she's with Chase then she's not with House and there's less House/Cameron insinuations going on, and part of it is just that I love Chase (I have no idea why, I just do) and want him to be happy (and have a storyline!), and part if it is just that I like them together. I'm still not really invested in this show and I don't believe I ever will be, but I do enjoy it most of the time and I will keep watching it because I am incapable of letting shows go (see: Lost. Also, the fact that I watched Charmed all the way till the end). The finale was kind of crazy and I'll be somewhat interested to see how they bring all three of them back, because you know they have to be back next season.
Lost: sigh. Why am I still watching this? It has its moments, but they're so few and far between. I mean, an entire episode devoted to explaining why Matthew Fox has tattoos? And killing off Charlie?! He was my favorite character when the show started, and he kind of got to be an ass last season, but he redeemed himself a bit this season and I loved him so much with Claire.(Although, ok, I realize that might've been due more to the actor wanting off than them just deciding to kill him.) And I got so tired of all the episodes just about Jack, Kate, and Sawyer (and once and while Locke). THERE ARE OTHER CHARACTERS THAT I CARE WAY MORE ABOUT. It just got so boring after awhile. And of course the finale was crazy and I kind of loved it and now I have to watch next season and this is what happens every year with Lost and honestly they either need to be awesome much more of the year (WHICH I KNOW THEY CAN DO BUT THEY SEEM TO JUST CHOOSE NOT TO) or have crappier finales so I won't be sucked in year after year because I'm just tired of it. I'm rather happy that the creators have decided on an end point for the series. Hopefully the remaining seasons will be better quality and make more sense and such because of this. In any case, I'll at least know how much longer I have to suffer through seasons of bad episodes for the occasional really excellent episodes.
My Name Is Earl: This is a good show, but for some reason I just can't get sucked in. I enjoy watching it, but I don't care if I miss an episode, and I could never see me buying the DVDs or going out of my way to rewatch episodes. I really don't know why.
The O.C.: I can't believe how upset I am that this show is gone. I absolutely adored season 1, but I was so close to giving up the show during seasons 2 and 3 many times. Watching it just felt like a chore. But then this season happened, and I remembered why I loved it in the first place. Taylor became a regular and one of the best characters on television, Seth and Summer were awesome once again (and Seth stopped being kind of an asshole), there were bunnies!, Kaitlin was also kind of awesome (I don't think I ever mentioned her in any episode posts I made, but I really enjoyed her. I loved her relationship with Julie, and with the Bullit), Ryan/Taylor happened (a ship I didn't realize I was craving until all of a sudden it was there), and I discovered a love for Ryan I never knew. I mean, I had never hated him before or anything, but I was just kind of "eh" about him. I think maybe because all his storylines had to do with Marissa, and I hated Marissa. But this season really made me love him. This show took me through high school, and I'm sorry to see it go, but I'm glad it was able to go out on top.
The Office: Oh, Office. How I love you. I think overall maybe I didn't like it as much as season 2, but it's hard to say since I've watched every episode of season 2 countless times and those of season 3 just once. I think I'll have to wait until the DVDs to really judge it against season 2. But even if I didn't like it as much, it was still incredibly hilarious. It had some of Jim's best pranks against Dwight: pretending to be becoming a vampire, dressing up like Dwight, and (possibly my favorite of the entire series) sending Dwight faxes from "Future Dwight." It had Jim asking Pam out in the finale! (Oh god I hope they don't screw that up next season. I'm not sure if I want them to be together or not, because if they're not then it's just like how long can they drag this out, but if they are then I'm afraid they won't be as interesting anymore. I'm going to try to trust the writers because they've been awesome so far.) But most of all, probably my favorite thing about this season is Pam. Seeing her pine for Jim for once and being aware of her feelings. Confronting everyone at the beach for not going to her art show, and then Jim for being different, because it's true, he wasn't the same as last season, and I think even though it wasn't as enjoyable for us to watch, it made so much sense that he wouldn't be the same and I love this show so much for being so smart. God there were so many brilliant episodes and I really can't wait until the DVDs come out, and until season 4.
Prison Break: I don't really know how it happened, but I ended up loving this show even more this year than last year. It was just so fun to watch as everyone split up and went their own ways. So many awesome things happened this season. Veronica died! And Michael/Sara!!! omfg!!! (I ship them so hard.) God I love them together. They were so sweet and awesome and ah man. I think a lot of people hated the finale, but I really liked it. I just hope that Michael doesn't stay in prison all season, because that would feel too much like season 1 again I think. I don't know, I enjoy them a lot more when they're all out of prison for some reason. But yeah, anyways, I totally adored this season. My only complaint: WHY DID ABRUZZI GET KILLED OFF AND C-NOTE LASTED ALL SEASON LONG?! gah!
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip: The pilot was so promising and I remember loving the first couple of episodes, but then everything just went downhill. Even when it started to look like things were going up, everything fell apart. I loved Danny's crush on Jordan at the beginning and him telling him his feelings and being all cute in the Christmas episode, and then they turned him into a crazy stalker in the next episode so all I could feel was creeped out when they finally did get together. It just sucks because it was the pilot I was most excited about at the beginning of the season, and it ended up being the new show I cared least about, the only new show I watched that I ended up not caring at all about. I actually haven't been watching the rest of the season that they're airing now even though my DVR player is recording it because I just don't care what happens. I love Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford, they were totally great, but the show just... wasn't, and I really wanted to like it but I ended up really not.
Supernatural: Man this season was good. Better than season 1, and I liked season 1 a lot. They just had week after week of excellent episodes, and they shifted from dark episodes to the funnier, filler episodes so well. And Jared was awesome this season, but Jensen was just... man. The whole "What if Mary hadn't died?" episode and then with Sam dying in the second to last episode and then being ready to let the world end because Sam was dead. geez. I can't wait until next season. I have no idea how they're going to deal with the fact that Dean only has one year to live, but I'm sure it's going to be awesome.
Torchwood: I kind of love this show. I love Jack/Ianto so much (except when I'm watching Doctor Who, and then I love Jack/Ten a little bit more). I kind of really liked Owen/Gwen (it was preferable to Jack/Gwen, which I was positive was going to happen when I was starting the show). Not all the episodes were brilliant, but there were a lot of really excellent ones. I'm really looking forward to the next season (except I kind of don't want the show to exist anymore because I want Jack to be the Doctor's companion, but since that's not going to happen, I'm looking forward to next season).
Ugly Betty: I can't believe I almost didn't watch this show. I was going to and then I wasn't because it conflicted with My Name is Earl and The Office and I had too many TV shows on Thursdays as it was (oh god Thursday night TV was the most amazing night of TV ever this year) but then the pilot aired and everyone loved it so I downloaded the first episode and I'm so glad I did. It was definitely my favorite new show of the season. All the actors are amazing, all the characters are hilarious and awesome. Betty is such a sweet, loveable main character, and her family is so wonderful, and all the people at Mode are so fun to watch. Henry and Betty are totally adorable together (AND BETTER GET TOGETHER NEXT SEASON DAMNIT!). I love all the characters, but Marc is totally my favorite. Michael Urie is just amazing and Marc is so fun to watch. The episode where he comes out to his mom is both hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. I love the show even when it goes all over-the-top and soap-operaish because it totally works for this show, no matter how unbelievable it seems. Seriously, I just can't say enough good things about this show. The only bad thing is that the finale kind of disappointed me overall. But I'm hoping that was just a fluke and it'll be back to its former excellence when it returns.
Veronica Mars: I almost don't want to talk about this show because everyone seemed to start absolutely hating the show midseason and gave it up and I found that I enjoyed the show much more when I ignored what everyone else was saying and didn't offer up any opinions of my own. I really did not hate this season. I thought it had some very good episodes and there were some great moments. No, it wasn't as good as season 2, and season 2 wasn't as good as season 1, but... I still enjoyed it. I don't know, I think I'm just overprotective of it and gloss over its issues more than I do with any other show but I just... didn't have as many problems with it as other people seemed to. The last two episodes were really excellent, it just sucked that the last episode ended up being a series finale since it was written to be a season finale and there was cliffhanger-ness and Veronica ended up with Piz and not Logan (although she and Logan started making steps to being friends again). I know a lot of people hated Piz, but he ended up being pretty cute by the end of the season with Veronica (even though I still prefer her with Logan, of course). Just... I don't know. I can't put my thoughts together on this show well. I'm mostly sad that this season was the last because the last episode wasn't a proper finale and because I still like the show a lot, but I'm partially happy only so all the posts bashing the show and insinuating anyone who still watched it was an idiot won't continue next season. Goodbye, Veronica Mars. You had a brilliant first season and a pretty great second season and a good third season and I'm sorry you had to end the way you did.
I totally caught my mom watching a rerun of Ugly Betty last night. I'm so awesome at getting her to watch the TV shows I like.
