Hee. My mom rented the Battlestar Galactica mini-series and watched it and liked it. I've mentioned the show before to her and told her she would probably like it (she likes Doctor Who and she's a science fiction and fantasy writer, so I thought it would be something she'd like), but she totally watched it without any encouragement from me at all. Usually I have to make my parents watch DVDs of shows I think they'd like when we're on vacation or whatever, but she totally did this on her own. I am greatly amused by this. I don't think she likes it as much as Doctor Who or other shows I've showed her, but I actually didn't totally love the show after the mini-series either (I love the mini-series now, but it took awhile for me to get into the show and get familiar with the characters and the world), so I told her that it gets even more interesting in further seasons.

Anyways, I've been working all day, which is no fun. I woke up at 8 AM, ok? On a SUNDAY. That's just wrong. But I did manage to get loads of work done in that time, so it was worth it. I still need to study more for my abnormal psych test tomorrow and prepare for my Drugs and Society presentation, but I finished my part of the group paper I have due for Drugs and Society, and now I only have one paper left this semester! I am so happy about that. Only 4 days, and I'll be totally done with this semester! 2 days, and I'll be done with classes! I can't wait.

Very brief random comments on TV from the past few days:

Battlestar Galactica 4.03: The Ties that Bind )

Doctor Who Season 4 )

Skins 2.10: Everyone )

So I was really proud of myself for memorizing the 126 film terms I have to memorize for my film vocab test on Tuesday yesterday afternoon. I knew there were a couple of terms left in the book that I hadn't made flashcards for, but I thought I had it mostly done. So after dinner, I started making flashcards for the terms I had missed, and it turned out I had 48 terms left to memorize. ...ha. Awesome.

Add this on to the fact that my final Drugs and Society test was supposed to be this coming Friday and I had my studying for that, this film vocab test, and writing my English paper all planned out for this weekend until the professor was like "What, Friday? Sorry, it's on Wednesday! We start presentations on Friday!" which NO ONE in the class had a CLUE about, and the fact that I have no idea what book I'm writing about for my paper, this weekend is going totally wonderfully.

Also, yesterday was Springfest, where a bunch of bands play all day and there are bouncy castles and... that's about all I could tell from watching from the windows in the library. Which would have been totally fun to go to, except I was stuck in the library all afternoon studying. ugh. Why did it have to be THIS weekend. Worst weekend EVER.

Anyways, time to finish memorizing film vocab, make and memorize Drugs and Society flashcards, and write my English paper. Have I mentioned how AWESOME these last few weeks of the semester are? The only thing getting me through is knowing that there are now only 2 1/2 weeks left of school and the past few weeks have gone by really quickly, so hopefully these weeks will go by just as fast.

Apparently Peter Berg is coming to speak at graduation here in May. If you don't know who he is, he's been in various movies that you can find on imdb (none of them I've seen), but more importantly, he wrote the Friday Night Lights movie screenplay, is involved in the development of the show, and he directed both the movie and the pilot episode of FNL. It turns out that he went to my school, which I feel like I knew before but forgot. Unfortunately graduation is at least a week after I'm planning on leaving, so I don't get to hear him speak. Pretty cool, though.

Torchwood 2.13 )

I watched the season premiere of Battlestar Galactica and totally loved it, but I actually think I have more to say about the last 15 minutes of the season 3 finale. I watched the end of the finale right before the premiere since it was showing on SciFi, and I didn't talk much about the episode when it originally aired, but holy crap, the end just kills me. I totally just have goosebumps for the entire last quarter of that episode. Everything is just brilliant and amazing and reminds me why I love the show so much. And now I desperately need to rewatch the entire series, especially since I've only seen season 1 and the first half of season 2 twice, and season 3 and the second half of season 2 once. This is, of course, in no way feasible considering the ridiculous amount of work I have left this semester. I'm hoping to be able to do it once the semester is over. I should be able to, but there are like a million shows I've gotten the urge to rewatch in the past few months, so I don't know if I'll still want to in a month.

I've actually managed to get some work done today already, which I'm really proud of. I usually only get anything done on Saturdays if I have a paper due the following week. So far I've finished the reading for Film Analysis that... ok, was due Thursday (but I didn't have time to finish it during the week because of my Drugs and Society test and... my incessant procrastinating), but I've also finished the reading for Engilsh that's due on Tuesday. I'm going to keep working on various things until dinner (so, another 2-3 hours) and then I can relax for the rest of the night and hopefully have less work to do on Sunday and during the week as a result. I totally said I was going to post the photo meme today and that's clearly not happening. The plan is to post it tomorrow, but at this rate, it'll probably be up by, like, July. ugh. I fail.

Impatiently waiting for the Doctor Who premiere to pop up! I want it desperately (even though I'm supposed to still work for another few hours and wouldn't be able to watch it until after dinner anyways).

So I wrote this up like a month ago and was just waiting for the Doctor Who finale to post, but then it came and I totally forgot about it. But anyways, since I did a short review of all the shows I watched last year, I figured I'd do the same for this year. There are spoilers, so if you haven't seen all of a TV show that aired this year then you might not want to read it (the shows under the cut are Battlestar Galactica, The Black Donnellys, Doctor Who, Gilmore Girls, Heroes, House, Lost, My Name is Earl, The O.C., The Office, Prison Break, Studio 60, Supernatural, Torchwood, Ugly Betty, and Veronica Mars). 2006-2007 Television Season )

I totally caught my mom watching a rerun of Ugly Betty last night. I'm so awesome at getting her to watch the TV shows I like.

Rejected from Brown, which, I mean, I love Brown, but it's not like I was expecting to get in. Now I'm just waiting on Amherst, but that'll probably also be a rejection. I think I'm going to go to Macalester. As much as I was excited about getting into Tufts Friday, I just like Macalester more. This wouldn't have been the case like 6 months ago, but this past week I've been researching it a lot and looking at these posts on this forum the admissions officers made for people who have been accepted to ask current students questions, and I just really like it. I love their Humanities, Media, and Cultural studies major, and their psych major also looks pretty good (although part of Tufts that's still drawing me to going there is their psychology major with clinical psychology focus). I don't know, there are a lot of good things about Tufts, but I think Macalester is a much better fit for me. (Plus, it's like $10,000 cheaper.)

I watched the season 3 premiere of Doctor Who. This isn't really at all an episode review and it's not even spoilery for this episode, but there is a small spoiler (that I feel like everyone must have heard by now, but I can't be sure of that) for the end of the season, so under the cut it goes. Doctor Who 3.01: Smith and Jones )

And now I have the urge to buy seasons 1 and 2 of Doctor Who on amazon (and they're so much cheaper than they used to be! I saw season 1 in Barnes and Noble when I was in Minneapolis last summer and it was $100, and now they're both $65ish!) and I'm trying to resist because I don't really need to blow the remaining $100 on my gift certificate to amazon.com, and anyways, I blew a lot of money off my visabuxx card on gas and Paintshop Pro (because I freaking lost the CD! and then had to get a new computer) and whatever else, but I really have the urge to get them because I want to see them again. Also, I want Torchwood to be on again. I don't really know why. I just got the urge to watch it when watching Doctor Who.

Anyways, I also finally watched the last two episodes of Battlestar Galactica (I generally record them because I hate watching TV on Sunday night, and I hate watching shows at 10 PM even more, so BSG's timeslot is pretty much the worst thing ever) and I don't feel like talking extensively about them, but the end of the finale totally blew my mind (even though I was kind of predicting something like that pretty much all through those two episodes). And for the past... well since it came back in January, I've been kind of meh about BSG but those episodes (especially the finale!) have made me all ridiculously excited about it again, and now it's not coming back until next January? Why must you torture me?!

One week until spring break! How did that happen? I was expecting it to not be for another week or so! But ah, so excited. Band trip to San Fran! Many days where I can sit around and watch movies and maybe finally watch seasons 5-7 of The West Wing, because yeah, I haven't touched those DVDs since February. This week is going to be a bitch, but it'll be awesome when it's finally over.

Still no computer, still no idea when I'm going to get one. sigh.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas. I mostly got books and DVDs. I've been spending my time without a computer watching Battlestar Galactica Season 1 and Grosse Pointe Season 1, but I've finished all the episodes now.

But man, Grosse Pointe was so freaking good. I watched it when it first aired so when I was like 11 I guess, and I remember liking it then, but I wasn't sure if it was as good as I remembered. But ah, it's so hilarious. I think it's pretty much the only good comedy The WB has ever made (well, actually, I liked Maybe It's Me pretty well, but I haven't seen that in ages either, so I'm not sure), so of course it got cancelled after 17 episodes. I think I'd be ok with that if they hadn't made it like a cliffhanger ending. Well, it's not really a cliffhanger, but I really really wanted Marcy and Dave to get together, and I hated that they never got to know that they were both into each other. blah. I guess I should be thankful it came out on DVD at all.

The first season of BSG was also a lot of fun to watch, just because I'm so much more into it now than the first time I watched season 1. I still have the special features to watch on it so I think I'll do that next.

The biggest thing that's happened so far over break is that I got accepted to Colorado College, which is pretty awesome since they aren't supposed to come out until mid-January. One of the admissions directors even wrote me a hand-written note saying how much they liked my essay and were impressed by me and stuff, which I thought was really awesome that they would take the time to do that. And Colorado College isn't a safety like Lewis and Clark, so it was more exciting to get accepted there (although I might like Lewis and Clark just the slightest bit more).

But other than that, I haven't been doing much except for watching DVDs. Tomorrow I think Soan wanted to go ice-skating, but I'm not sure if that's going to happen, and we still have to do secret santa so that might happen Saturday. Then it's New Year's, and after that I'm going to Mammoth to go skiing from Tuesday to Saturday. Hopefully I'll have my computer by then, but I'm doubtful. Oh well. I'll get it eventually, I guess.

Something I wanted to say about The Christmas Invasion (and New Earth, I guess, too). Contains spoilers for season 2 finale of Doctor Who )

All the millions of Battlestar Galactica previews during Doctor Who made me ridiculously giddy for the premiere next Friday. I kind of wasn't thinking about it much, but now that I've realized it's premiering in just a week, I'm super excited. Too bad we have a football game next Friday, so I won't be able to see the episode until Saturday morning/early afternoon.

I also ended up watching the premiere of Ugly Betty. A few comments. )

Ugly Betty's on the same time I think as My Name is Earl and The Office, but I don't think I'm watching anything else at the same time, so I can record it. I wasn't sure I'd keep watching it, but yeah, I ended up liking it a lot, so I'll keep watching. I was hesitant of adding a new show to all the other ones I'm watching, but I did like it a lot, and I should have time Fridays before Doctor Who/BSG to watch the episodes I record.

So, I finally finished Battlestar Galactica last night )

Anyways, not sure what I'm going to check out next. I think My So-Called Life, like I said in the last post, but it's going to take a long time for me to download, so I'm thinking of starting something else in the meantime. Anyone want to rec me any shows you think I should watch? (You can check my userinfo for ones I've already seen, because I think I have seen a fair amount.)

First week of summer school is done, thankfully. Just 5 left. sigh.
brokenrecord: (Default)
So season 1 of Battlestar Galactica didn't take as long it did the first time I tried to download it, so I ended up getting through the entire season yesterday afternoon. Somewhere along the way I started really, really liking it, but I'm not exactly sure where. I'm still not like... fanatic over it, but at the same time I couldn't stop thinking about it all morning through summer school, so, you know. It's not like I am just kind of liking it, either. Anyways, I have season 2 as well now, so I'm planning on getting through episode 10-ish today and finishing the rest Thursday afternoon.

Ugh, but I have a test in poli sci tomorrow. I mean, I like poli sci and it's not difficult, I just need to study for like... 30 min or so, but still. It should be illegal to give tests during summer. At least it's not econ, though. I'd get nothing done if it were econ.

Oh, and you know how I said that I didn't think I'd be hating my econ teacher as much as I hate other teachers I've really hated in the past? Well, I may have spoken too soon. I mean, I don't yet, but... well first off, yesterday he was like "Ok we'll do this and this and then take a pop quiz on chapter 1" and we're all "...what?" and he's like "Ha! You guys didn't read the first chapter! You're all screwed!" (Well, essentially he was gloating about us not having done the reading) and we're all "...but you never told us to read!" and he's all "...oh? Um. Ok. Fine. I guess it was just second period I told that". So at least he didn't end up making us take the quiz, but... I still hate it when teachers have no idea what they said in class and stuff. I don't know. It just really bothers me.

That would be fine, but then today he was like "Ok, chapter 2 pop quiz at 7:15, anyone who's late gets a 0 on the quiz" and I think most people figured like... if they came in after the quiz started, maybe? But these people were like 40 seconds late, and we weren't even doing anything, they weren't disrupting the class or anything, and he's like "You get 0's!" Then he was like "I'm in a good mood, so you can have half-credit on the quizzes" but still, wtf? That's ridiculous. Take off points from their participation grade like you said you would or don't let them have a break, or whatever, but giving them a 0 on a quiz we're not even starting for another 15 minutes? Ridiculous.

Anyways, I guess I should study some before poli sci before starting season 2 of Battlestar Galactica. I'm thinking after finishing season 2 of BSG I'm going to start watching My So-Called Life, since I started that last summer and really enjoyed it, but finding downloads was difficult and then I just kind of forgot about it after about episode 9 or 10. But I'd really like to watch the rest of the season, so yeah. That'll probably be next. Ah, even with summer school, summer break is so nice.
brokenrecord: (Default)
So, thankfully I was able to finally watch the Battlestar Galactica mini-series, and then also the first two episodes. I think I like it. The more I watch, the more invested in the characters I get, and the more I end up liking the show. I'm not obsessed over it yet, but I wasn't obsessed over Veronica Mars after like 2 or 3 episodes either, and look how obsessed with that show I am. So yeah, we'll see, I guess. I did that Friday and spent the rest of the weekend downloading season 1 and it finally finished last night at like 11 PM so I'll start watching season 1 today.

This morning was summer school. blah. Economics was all right, just very boring. I wouldn't be anymore interested in it during the school year, though, so it's fine. And the teacher seems nice enough, even if he's boring, so I don't think I'll start hating him like I hate Mme. de Berry or Mr. Tran. Political Science was a lot better. The first half was boring, but when Mr. Sorey started lecturing it was amusing because it just felt like I was right back in his AP US class sophomore year. I have a feeling I'll like that class way more than Econ.

Anyways, now for lunch, and then watching the rest of season 1 of BSG.

Edit: gah. Spoke too soon. Apparently I didn't choose well downloading, and I ended up with a season worth of episodes that stop playing after the first 5-10 seconds. sigh. So now I get to spend three more days finding a new copy of the season and downloading that instead. And I was really looking forward to watching the rest of season 1 today and tomorrow. :( sigh.
brokenrecord: (Default)
Clearly the fates of the world do not want me to watch Battlestar Galactica. Seriously. Last summer I had the mini-series downloaded and watched like 5 or 6 min but I was in a bad mood that day and wasn't interested in it so I stopped paying attention and then didn't watch anymore of it and ended up deleting it from my computer.

Now I'd like to try again, and I have the mini-series and the first 2 episodes on my computer. All morning I couldn't watch because I kept expecting my mom to arrive home with lunch (I was waiting from like 11:30 and I ended up waiting until 1:30 and then calling her and she didn't get home till 2:00. Such a waste of time waiting). Now, done with lunch, nothing to do, I sit down, watch the first 6 minutes, and my mom knocks on my door and tells me she has to take her car into the dealership right now and I have to drive in my car too so I can take her home.

Seriously. I'm never going to be able to watch this show because I can never get past the first freaking 6 minutes.
