Ok, so now for stuff not related to Harry Potter. (Ok, mostly.)

I got my Macalester e-mail and found out my first year course. Unfortunately I got my third choice FYC, The History and Evolution of the Earth. It's kind of more my fourth choice just because my fourth was Intro to Psych and only reason I put it fourth was because I wanted the other section of it more that wasn't a FYC. I don't know, the class sounds interesting, and it's a residential course like I wanted, but... it's geology. And the professor is my advisor and I don't really have a great interest in the field. I really, really wanted that film analysis class. sigh. And the history class I put for second would be fine too, because history is actually something I would major in. Oh well. I hope the rest of my schedule is more what I wanted. If I didn't get into that intro to psych class I'm going to be really upset.

On a happier note, I got my Macbook on Thursday! I love it so far. It's been hardest to adjust to the smaller text sizes, but I think I'm ok with it now. And it always sucks to find out that programs I took for granted before only work with Windows and not Mac. I obviously had heard that before, but I didn't realize how many it was really true of. I bought Paintshop Pro for $70ish just 6 months ago, and it doesn't work on Macs! gah. So my choices are to either buy Photoshop for $700 or buy Parallels (and I guess I would have to buy Windows XP as well?) for $80. Yeah, pretty obvious which route I'm going to go. Besides, Parallels will be useful for a lot more than using PSP, so I think it'll be worth it.

The one HP-related thing, I did finish all 6 books by Friday night. It was a good thing I reread the sixth book, because I forgot everything that happened in it, except I guess the stuff that I was spoiled for before I read it, which would be the Snape stuff and all the relationship stuff. But I forgot about Scrimgeour and Slughorn and even the Horcruxes. Seriously. And some stuff like that I would read and be like "Oh, yeah, I remember that," but there was plenty of stuff I would read and wouldn't remember at all. It was kind of cool, like reading it for the first time again.

I saw that the first two episodes of Dexter season 2 have leaked online, and I'm trying to resist. I guess it's easier for me than those who watched it when it aired since I only finished season 1 a few weeks ago. I probably wouldn't be resisting if I had been waiting for months for the new season. But yeah, I think I'll leave it until it airs. And Dexter reminds me of the Emmy nominations, in which I'm slightly happy about some of them (Jenna Fischer! I wasn't expecting her to get nominated, and I'm so happy she did. She really deserves it), but that's mostly overshadowed by the fact that Friday Night Lights and Dexter got no major nominations. I was sure that if they both wouldn't be nominated, at least one would be for something. I mean, I watch House and Heroes (I can't comment on other shows nominated instead like Boston Legal and Grey's Anatomy because I don't watch them), and I enjoy them, but no way are either of them better than FNL or Dexter in just about any respect. Hugh Laurie, maybe, but the show as a whole, not so much. And I love Masi Oka and Hiro to bits, but I don't really feel he deserves his nom. Oh well. It's not like I expected to be thrilled with all the nominations.

Um, what else? I've watched a couple of leaked pilots so far (Reaper, Chuck, and Pushing Daisies), but I think I'll comment on them in a separate post later. Or I'll get lazy and forget. Haven't really been doing much today. It's like I have no idea what to do now that I'm done with Harry Potter. I'll have to figure something else out.

I feel all excited and anxious and happy right now. This week is a good week:

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows! This is slightly diminished by the fact that Alex is having his birthday party on July 21st (;lksjafd!!! He should know better. Sadly I don't think he reads Harry Potter) and it starts at 11 AM and I pre-ordered the book on Amazon so I probably won't get it until after I leave and I won't be able to start reading it until that night or the next day. Also, my mom just told me I have a dentist appointment at 10:30 that day. So I won't even get to his party until about noon. Still, it's coming out, and I'm excited for it.

2. Macbook will probably arrive sometime this week! Ok, it might not come until next week, but there's a good chance it'll be this week, and I'm looking forward to it.

3. TB test on Thursday. Not so much something I'm looking forward to, but I'll be relieved when it's over.

4. I got a checking out and applied for a credit card on Saturday! The debit card should arrive sometime this week. I mean, I had the Visabuxx card before which is like a debit card except only your parents can add money to it, so I was able to order things online and buy gas and such before, but this is cooler because I can add money myself and it's my account and they can't look at what I've bought and judge me for it.

5. Not so much this week, but in general, being more social. There was OotP and then Mrs. Bentley's thing and yesterday I went to dinner with people and then the Shakespeare in the Park thing was too crowded so instead we rented Shakespeare in Love and watched it at my house and that was fun, and there's Alex's party on Saturday which I am a little disappointed about just because of Harry Potter, but it'll be fun to see everyone, and I think Emma's going and it's the first time I will have seen her since graduation since she's been in Europe most of the summer so far and yeah. And I haven't seen much of my other friends either until this past week, so it'll be nice to see them again. I think it's starting to hit me how much I'll miss them.

6. Ok, so no more about specifically why this week is awesome, but more how I'm excited in general: going camping with my friends from August 5-8. It's going to be beach camping in Malibu and it's going to be a lot of fun, I think, and I'm looking forward to it.

7. Instead of flying up to school, we're going to take a road trip and leave 10 days before I need to get there and visit a lot of the west/midwest, which is cool because I haven't seen much of this area except for California (obviously), Tuscon, and Las Vegas. So it'll be nice to see the other parts. And I had wanted to go on vacation this summer so yeah. It'll be fun.

I don't know how much I'm going to be on-line this week just because I'm terrified of spoilers for Harry Potter. I was spoiled for absolutely everything in HBP (everything from the major stuff at the end to all the relationships in the book) and it was partially my fault but this time I don't want to be spoiled for anything. It shouldn't be too hard as I still have books 4-6 to reread so that should take up most of the week.

Went to the midnight showing of Harry Potter on Tuesday with a bunch of friends which was a lot of fun. And I really liked the movie. When I first came out I was just like "Well, that was better than I thought it would be" but the more I think about it, the more I really loved it. It's my favorite so far of the movies (well I've only seen the second half of Chamber of Secrets. And I totally hate Prisoner of Azkaban which I think is a very unpopular opinion but I love the book so much and I don't think anything could have lived up to what I hoped for it to be like. I think maybe if I rewatch it I would like it better. But at this point the 5th is totally my favorite). Of course they had to cut out a bunch of stuff, but that's to be expected, and once you get past that I think they did a good job of capturing the tone of the book. And it's just shot so beautifully. The cinematography is excellent.

I've been starting my reread of the series and something jumped out of me. Spoilers only for the first book. )

Anyways, I've been spending a lot more being social this week than I have since graduation. There was the Harry Potter thing and then Wednesday there was a small party-ish gathering thing in the band room for Mrs. Bentley's resignation which was nice and on Sunday I'm going to dinner with some friends and then we're going to watch Taming of the Shrew for this Shakespeare in the Park thing. So that'll be fun.

I ordered a Macbook (my graduation present) yesterday! I'm excited for it to come. I've never had a Mac before so I'm hoping I'll get used to it and like it and such. Hopefully it won't break down as frequently as my past few computers have (although those were all Dells and I've heard Dells are the worst).

Less happy and exciting, I'm getting a TB test on Thursday since it's required for college. If you don't know, I absolutely hate going to the doctor and needles. I'm so terrified of needles, and I swear I must have a much lower tolerance for pain than everyone else on the planet because I just cannot handle shots and blood tests and such. Everyone always says it won't be as bad as I think, but then it always is (or it's worse). I at least feel better that I have an appointment set and I won't just be worrying knowing I need to make an appointment before August 1st, but having no idea when it will be.

So my printer/scanner hasn't been working since I got my new computer in January because I lost the disks to install them. But Soan suggested searching online and I found a place to download the drivers to install them and now they work! You have no idea how happy I am about this. It's such a relief not to have to use my mom's computer everytime I need to print something. And she doesn't even have a scanner. I just wish I could've figured this out 3 months ago.

Last week was kind of ridiculous in terms of stuff I had to do. I had 10 lit journals due on Friday, plus like... 2 mini-essays and one full essay due in French, plus all the normal school work. Then there were musical rehearsals and the actual shows and two extra jazz band things. But the week is finally over and I got everything done and I'm happy. Of course now I have APs to look forward to next week. I'm so severely screwed for French, moreso than any other class besides maybe Physics, and it's the only AP I can actually use to fulfill requirements in college. Oh well. All I need is a 3 or above, so I'm hoping I get it.

Friday and Saturday me and my friends watched the musical (for free! since we played the overture thing before it started) and I kind of wish they had just done a normal musical (I mean, I know why they couldn't, but I still wish they could've) but it was still good. There were a couple of numbers in particular (like Grease Lightning) which were really awesome. And I totally fell in love with this one song from Children of Eden and now I want to see the musical but I don't think it's showing anywhere anymore. I mean, maybe in random high schools/colleges around the country, but it's not like it's showing anywhere close where I can go and see it. Oh well. I'll just have to settle for ordering the soundtrack.

This week should be a lot better than last week, but unfortunately this is the week that I get to start panicking over how unprepared I am for all my APs (except for English I guess, because there's not anything you can do to prepare for that at this point. Just being in the class for all these months is enough preparation, really). sigh. I can't wait until APs are over. Then there are only like 3-4 weeks until senior finals and then I'm done.

!!! My computer came today! I don't know what the order status thing was going on about, because Wednesday is a lot sooner than Friday. wheee I'm so happy now! :D

Today's just been a good day all round. In chem we got our tests back we took before winter break and I thought I had done really poorly and I ended up getting a 53/54, which will bring up my grade 1% and I'm now at an 89.4 which is so freaking close to an A. And in French, which is usually an awful class, we spent like the whole period listening to this French song that sounded like 'NSYNC or the Backstreet Boys (and it was totally written in the 90s) and it was kind of awesome.

Anyways, I suppose I should go start downloading everything I need onto this computer. Oh, but first! I meant to post on New Year's Day all the movies I watched and books I read in 2006, but what with the lack of computer and my mother's computer sucking, that didn't really happen. So, here it is now. The movies have short reviews and a rating out of 10, while the books just have stars out of 5.

gah. Dell called last week and left a message saying my computer should arrive this Monday to this Wednesday, and today, still no computer. But I was finally able to check my order status, and apparently the order just shipped today, and it's due to arrive at earliest this Friday and at latest on Tuesday. al;skjdf gah! I'm getting really frustrated with this! They said they'd send me a new computer immediately when my mom e-mailed them 3 weeks ago! I'm sick of having no computer! My teachers have all been out to make my life miserable by assigning no homework and there's nothing new on TV (well, ok, there was a new House tonight, and there'll be Thursday night TV, but there was nothing last night, or anything else for the past few weeks) and I know the second I get my computer it'll be finals and I'll have a million things to do. a;lskdjf gah! And, ok, technically I have been able to use my mom's computer so I'm not totally helpless, but you can hardly classify this thing as a computer. I can't open more than webpage at once or it'll go bezerk and freeze and god I hate it.

And for some reason, everything's breaking! First it was the computer, then my mom's car, then my iPod suddenly and randomly on the way to Mammoth (the screen froze, but luckily after the battery wore out and it turned off, when I charged it up again it was fine. But now I'm getting anxious because I'm afraid it'll break permanently and if I lose my iPod, then all my music is gone forever because my computer is broken too), and our heater is broken. I mean, ok, Monday at 7 AM it was 70 degrees, but still. It gets cold at night, and it's supposed to be colder tomorrow.

sigh. Anyways, in better news, I realized yesterday suddenly that my 18th birthday is this coming Sunday. I'm not quite sure when that happened, since last I checked it was like a month away, but anyways. I'm going to try to do something on Saturday with friends, but I don't know how well that's going to work out since I don't really have any idea of what I want to do. We'll see. Oh, and today we finally did Secret Santa and Andrew got me this scarf with mooses (meese?) on it and candy and it came in a really, really nice box. So that made me happy, at least.

Oh and I got an e-mail today from an alum at Vassar to schedule an interview, which I'm really happy about since it's my first choice school and they don't know they're my first choice school and I really want them to know how much I want to go there. It's good too since I haven't had an interview in awhile, but it'll be right after my Pitzer interview on the 20th, so I'll at least have that to prep for the Vassar interview.

That's about it. aslkdj I really desperately want my computer. :(

So, good news: I finally know when I'm getting my computer! It's supposed to come anywhere from Monday to Wednesday this coming week. So, I shouldn't be without it much longer! Unfortunately, I'm getting it right as I should be starting to review for finals, since I'm borderline in like all my classes except for band and French. Oh well. I'll still be very happy to have it back.

Just got back from Mammoth today. The skiing was all right. It was snowing pretty heavily the 3rd day we were there so we couldn't ski that day very much, and I wasn't skiing very well throughout the time. But it still ended up being fun. There was a DVD player in the room and I brought season 1 of Veronica Mars and finally got my parents to watch it with me, and both of them really loved it. They probably won't have a chance to watch season 2 anytime soon, but that's all right. They'll get to it eventually. It was so fun to watch season 1 again. I don't think I've watched it since I got it on DVD, right at the start of the second season.

I guess that's it. I really can't wait until I get my computer.
brokenrecord: (Default)
Still no computer, still no idea when I'm going to get one. sigh.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas. I mostly got books and DVDs. I've been spending my time without a computer watching Battlestar Galactica Season 1 and Grosse Pointe Season 1, but I've finished all the episodes now.

But man, Grosse Pointe was so freaking good. I watched it when it first aired so when I was like 11 I guess, and I remember liking it then, but I wasn't sure if it was as good as I remembered. But ah, it's so hilarious. I think it's pretty much the only good comedy The WB has ever made (well, actually, I liked Maybe It's Me pretty well, but I haven't seen that in ages either, so I'm not sure), so of course it got cancelled after 17 episodes. I think I'd be ok with that if they hadn't made it like a cliffhanger ending. Well, it's not really a cliffhanger, but I really really wanted Marcy and Dave to get together, and I hated that they never got to know that they were both into each other. blah. I guess I should be thankful it came out on DVD at all.

The first season of BSG was also a lot of fun to watch, just because I'm so much more into it now than the first time I watched season 1. I still have the special features to watch on it so I think I'll do that next.

The biggest thing that's happened so far over break is that I got accepted to Colorado College, which is pretty awesome since they aren't supposed to come out until mid-January. One of the admissions directors even wrote me a hand-written note saying how much they liked my essay and were impressed by me and stuff, which I thought was really awesome that they would take the time to do that. And Colorado College isn't a safety like Lewis and Clark, so it was more exciting to get accepted there (although I might like Lewis and Clark just the slightest bit more).

But other than that, I haven't been doing much except for watching DVDs. Tomorrow I think Soan wanted to go ice-skating, but I'm not sure if that's going to happen, and we still have to do secret santa so that might happen Saturday. Then it's New Year's, and after that I'm going to Mammoth to go skiing from Tuesday to Saturday. Hopefully I'll have my computer by then, but I'm doubtful. Oh well. I'll get it eventually, I guess.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my last post. I was most upset about Derek from when I found out he had stopped eating to right after he died, but after that I was better. Probably because he's been sick for like a year or two and he's never been in the best health and I've been expecting him to die for just as long. So now that he is, I can kind of accept it and move on.

It's really sad, though, one of my birds, Jason, he's really unsettled by Derek's death. Like, they were never friends, but they didn't hate each other either (they were just sort of acquaintances), but we got Jason after Derek, so as long as Jason's been here, Derek has. So I think it kind of freaks him out that he's all of a sudden not here. And for some reason he blames my dad. It's so bizarre. Whenever he comes home, Jason starts attacking him and won't go anywhere near him. He's a very confused little bird.

Computer is not in yet, so I still have to use my mom's to go on-line. It's not too difficult to update, but checking my friendslist would take hours, and since it's dial-up I don't really want to spend hours on it because it'll tie up the phone line, so I can update from time to time, but I won't be able to check my flist until I get the new computer. And so now I'm incredibly bored what with school finally being out and all. Today I went to blockbuster and rented Reefer Madness, Little Miss Sunshine, and the first Bridget Jones (even though I'd already seen it since I bought the 2nd for like $5 over the summer and haven't watched it yet (I mean, I'd seen it before I bought it, but I haven't seen the one I bought) since I felt like watching the second but didn't have the first, and I've never seen the first followed by the second before). I watched Reefer Madness and Little Miss Sunshine today, and Reefer Madness was good and Little Miss Sunshine was excellent.

Tomorrow I'll watch both Bridget Jones, possibly go and by myself new jeans since the ones I have now are getting holes everywhere, and possibly start some of my winter assignments (ugh, I have winter assignments in every class but calculus).

Today was pretty awful. Derek, one of my birds, died. He stopped eating on Monday morning and by this morning he couldn't hold himself up anymore. It wasn't totally unexpected because he's been sick for a long time, but I was still really upset about it. And it sucks too because it's like why are you so upset? and I'm like "My bird died" and it's like what? Bird? Who cares? But I had him since I was 6 years old and I'm 17 now, so that's way over half of my life. He didn't just sit in his cage all day and chirp; he had his own little personality and I don't know. I just really loved him. I'm still pretty upset about it and I probably will be for awhile, but I guess it's getting better.

On a happier note, but computer situation is fixed. Well, the computer itself isn't, but my mom e-mailed Dell and they e-mailed back and were like "OMG we're so sorry! We'll send you another computer right away!" It's like "...what? You're just going to send us a new computer?" Seems kind of weird, but whatever, I'll take it. It probably won't get here for a few weeks, and we're going skiing in Mammoth the day after New Years, so I might not have it awhile, but at least I'll have it eventually. And I don't have to feel guilty for asking my parents for a new computer!

Two more days left before winter break. Unfortunately, I have a lot of stuff to do, including studying for chem test, writing a french essay (I really need to start that tonight, but it's not likely), finish writing/editing the play for english, and physics test (except I decided to fail it since I can afford to drop a test since I have an A in the class right now even without a dropped test, so I probably won't bother studying for it). So I should probably start working on that now.
brokenrecord: (Default)
So, last night my computer started to smell like it was burning, and then it shut itself off. I managed to get back on and send myself some files that I didn't want to be lost forever, and then it shut itself off again and I didn't want to risk trying to turn it on again. Great timing for this to happen. So yeah, I'm not going to be around much for the next week or so (no idea how long it'll take for us to get it fixed, or if we'll even be able to get it fixed) and I can go on my mom's computer (which is what I'm using right now) but it's dial-up and I hate it and so I won't be able to go on it much. sigh. See you all when I have a working computer!
