Mar. 22nd, 2008 10:27 amI went shopping with my mom yesterday and by total accident got a pair of shoes and t-shirt that match perfectly. It's so weird. Photographic evidence! Like, the patches on the shoes and the design on the t-shirt look so good together. I have no idea how that happened. I didn't even realize it until I got home and saw them next to each other. It's fun when that happens!
I watched the two episodes of Miss Guided on Thursday, and the show either got better, or it was funnier than I remembered. I got more used to the confessionals, and I actually laughed out loud several times. Not the best sitcom ever, but it's not bad. Of course, I'm sure it'll be canceled immediately. I also watched the last episode of The Return of Jezebel James, and that show really isn't getting any better. There are only 4 new episodes left, though, and Michael Arden is totally adorable and awesome in his role, so I'll probably end up watching the rest.
I feel like I need to justify my reasons for participating in the LJ strike after reading some of the posts by people who didn't strike.
Ok, so I know a lot of people were saying that they didn't participate in the strike because they thought it was pointless. And I agree, if the point was to make LJ change its practices. I honestly didn't think not posting for 24 hours was going to make them bring basic accounts back. And I wasn't even striking because of the basic accounts as much as their way of revealing that they were no longer going to be offering basic accounts: first, hiding it in the FAQ and not including it in a news post. Then, when confronted about it, saying that the reason was because having three accounts options was too confusing for new users, and it made it simpler just having plus and paid accounts, which was a blatant lie. Then, when being confronted about that, saying that, ok, it was a business decision. And you know, as much as I dislike basic accounts being deleted, I would've been way less upset if they had just told us that outright.
So I participated in the strike. I didn't even expect that the people in charge of LJ would change their ways and stop lying to us because of the strike. I struck because I agreed with the sentiment of the strike, and I wanted to say that I didn't agree with the way things are being run around here anymore. I of course don't speak for everyone participating in the strike. I know people who struck for the same reason I did, and I know people who struck because they were against the deletion of basic accounts, and I know people who struck because they thought it would actually change something. I'm just describing why I did.
I feel the need to say all this because after the strike I read my flist and there were a bunch of posts about the "stupid" strike. There was even one person who was upset she was busy during the strike because she wanted to purposely spam her flist. I mean, I understand people being upset they'd be gone during the strike because they didn't want people thinking they were on strike when they weren't (although, I kind of don't get the big deal about that, either. Just post before or after the strike that you're not participating for whatever reasons, but you won't be around on that day and I don't see why anyone would think you were taking part. Honestly, I didn't assume people were participating in the strike if they didn't post unless they had made a post specifically saying that they were participating). But to be upset because you can't spam people's flists because of the strike is just... offensive, in a way. And so many people seemed to be referring to it as "that stupid strike." And, ok, I'm an extremely sensitive person. I take things personally even when they aren't meant that way, and every time I saw someone refer to the strike that way, I felt like they were calling me an idiot for participating. So it hurt to read my flist after the strike and see all this. (To be fair, most of this was either on my friendsfriends page or people I had friended who didn't have me friended. So none of this is actually directed to anyone who will be reading this. But I felt like I needed to say it.)
I just don't understand all that. Not participating in the strike I understand. But I feel like you'd have to be really against it to actively spam your flist during it solely for the purpose of... I don't know. Protesting the strike? And I don't get that. Because it seems like even the people against the strike supported the sentiment of the strike (which was exactly what I was doing by striking). Yet they acted like it was this terrible thing, or something. I mean if you just don't think it's going to work, why talk about it that way?
Obviously everyone has a right to talk about whatever they want in their LJ. But I felt like I needed to say this because it was honestly hurtful reading some of the posts and comments about the strike, and I don't really understand why they had to be made.
Oh well. At least it's over now. In a week, no one will even remember there was a strike.
Going to see In Bruges with my parents today. Ugh, last full day home. I am not looking forward to going back to school. The rest of this semester is going to be hell. Can it be May yet?

Date: 2008-03-24 05:15 pm (UTC)I'm glad that you understand my rambling about the strike! I was kind of afraid I was the only one feeling that way.
